When you open an image (instead of saving or downloading to disk), your browser creates an association between the kind of image you've opened and the program you've chosen to open it with. Any time you download another image of that type, the program you chose previously will automatically try to open it.

To break the association:

Explorer

1. In Explorer, select Internet Options... from the Tools menu (Explorer 5 and higher) or the View menu (Explorer 4).

2. Click the Advanced tab.

3. Click the Restore Defaults button (under the "Settings" box).

4. Click OK.

5. Quit and relaunch Explorer.

6. Try to download the image again. If you're prompted to save the image, choose Download to Disk or Save this file to disk (NOT "Open").

   WINDOWS USERS: If you STILL don't have the option to save your file, proceed to the next step.

7. Open Windows Explorer.

8. Select Folder Options... from Windows Explorer's View menu. (NOTE: That's WINDOWS Explorer, not Internet Explorer.)

9. Click the File Types tab.

10. Click the file type you would like to dissociate from the program.

11. Click the Edit... button.

12. Click any applications listed in the "Actions" box.

13. Click Remove.

14. Click OK.

15. Quit and relaunch Explorer.

NOTE: To keep the problem from reocurring the next time you download something from Explorer, choose Download to Disk or Save this file to disk (NOT "Open").

Netscape

1. In Netscape, select Preferences from the Edit menu.

2. Open the Navigator category (double-click the word "Navigator" or click the "+" to its left).

3. Click Applications or Helper Applications (under "Navigator").

4. Scroll through the list on the right until you find the file type you would like to dissociate from the program.

5. Click the item to select it.

6. Click the Edit button.

7. Under "Handled By," select "Save to Disk" or "Download to Disk."

8. Click OK in the "Edit Type" window.

9. Click OK in the "Preferences" window.

10. Quit and relaunch Netscape.

NOTE: To keep the problem from reocurring the next time you download something from Netscape, choose Save File and IGNORE all the verbiage about picking applications, expanding Netscape's capabilities, etc.
