What's the dpi of a image?
The resolution of a image depends on its format:

Web Art
Web GIFs, JPEGs, and PSDs are 72 dpi (to match typical monitor resolution).

Our photos average between 2" x 2.5" and 3" x 5" when scaled to 300 dpi.

Clipart -- JPEG and GIF
When scaled to 300 dpi, our clipart JPEGs average between 2" x 2.5" and 3" x 5", and our clipart GIFs average between 4" x 5" and 6" x 10" in one-bit black and white.

Clipart -- EPS and WMF
Unlike raster images (JPEG, GIF, PSD), vector graphics like EPS and WMF will print at the highest resolution of your printer or output device. DPI won't come into play unless you convert your vector image to a raster format.

See How do I resize my JPEG or GIF in an image editor? and How do I resize my image in a word processing/page layout application? to learn how to scale images.
