The image I downloaded has an '.art' extension.

  1. Select Preferences from Explorer's Edit menu.

  2. If the arrow to the left of "Receiving Files" (in the left frame) points to the right, click the arrow.

  3. Click Download Options.

  4. In the "Download Folder" box on the right, click Change Folder....

  5. Select a file location from the pop-up window. TIP: Saving files to the desktop makes them easier to find later.

  6. Click Select "[name of file location]".

  7. Click OK in the "Preferences" window.

  8. Quit and relaunch Explorer.
The America Online (AOL) browser may compress the ClipArt.com images you download, giving them an ".art" suffix to differentiate them from non-image files. Unfortunately, your application will probably not recognize the ".art" extension; if it does not, it will not be able to open your image.

If your files download with the ".art" suffix and your program does not recognize it, you can do one of two things: use a different browser, or disable AOL's image compression function.

Using a Different Browser

If you download image files with Netscape, Explorer, Opera, or any other non-AOL browser, the problem will not occur.

Disabling AOL's Image Compression Function

Different versions may have slightly different instructions. See AOL's help documentation for details.

AOL 7.0

  1. Click the Settings button on the icon bar.

  2. Click Preferences.

  3. On the left-hand column of the screen that appears, select Internet Properties.

  4. Click the Web Graphics option.

  5. Select Never Compress Graphics.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Log out of AOL.

When you log in to AOL again, AOL's compression function will be turned off.

AOL 6.0

  1. Click the Settings button on the icon bar.

  2. Click Preferences.

  3. Click Internet Properties.

  4. Click the Web Graphics tab.

  5. Select Never Compress Graphics.

  6. Click OK.

AOL 4.0 and 5.0

  1. Click the My AOL icon.

  2. Go to Preferences.

  3. Click the WWW button.

  4. In the dialogue box that opens, click the Web Graphics tab.

  5. Uncheck the "Use compressed graphics" box.

  6. Clear your AOL browser's cache:
    1. Click My AOL.
    2. Click Preferences.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Purge the cache.

  7. Close your AOL browser.

  8. Disconnect from AOL.

When you log in to AOL again, AOL's compression function will be turned off.

AOL 3.0

  1. Go to the Members item at the top of your AOL screen.

  2. Select Preferences.

  3. Click the www (or Web) icon and follow the instructions for your version of AOL:

    AOL 3.0.1 and higher (Macintosh)

    • Deselect/disable the "Use compressed images" option and click OK.

AOL 3.0 (32-bit version for Windows)

    • Select the Web Graphics tab.
    • Deselect/disable the "compress graphics" option and click OK.

AOL 3.0 (16-bit version for Windows)

    • A screen with options for compressing or uncompressing graphics will appear.
    • Enable the "UNcompress" option and click OK.

  4. Quit and relaunch the AOL browser.

Special thanks to Roxy M. Flanagan for providing much of the information above.
